After Surgery, Who Helps at Home? Medicare and Medicaid Recovery Support in Palm Beach and Broward

Dr. Adam Mann
For many patients, the hardest part of surgery is not the operating room, it is the first week at home. Dr. Adam Mann explains how planning for wound care, follow up, and transportation can make recovery safer, especially for Medicare and Medicaid patients.

The Question I Hear Most Often Is Not “Will the Surgery Work?”
It is this: “What happens when I go home?”
That question is especially common among seniors, caregivers, and patients juggling work and family. You might be thinking about pain control, lifting limits, showering safely, dressing changes, and how you will get to a follow up visit if you cannot drive after anesthesia.
Those are not small concerns. They are part of real surgical care.
Transportation Is a Safety Issue
After anesthesia, patients should not drive themselves. If transportation falls apart, follow up visits can be missed, wound checks can be delayed, and small problems can turn into urgent problems.
Planning transportation ahead of time is one of the simplest ways to make recovery safer.
Medicare and Home Health, When It Is Medically Appropriate
Some patients qualify for home health services after surgery, especially when skilled nursing support is needed, for example wound checks or dressing care.
Coverage and eligibility depend on your medical needs and the specific situation, so this is not automatic. The key point is that if you are worried about managing alone at home, you should bring that up in your consult so we can plan appropriately.
Medicaid and Recovery Planning
Medicaid coverage varies by plan, and benefits differ. Some patients have access to transportation support for medical visits, and some may qualify for additional assistance depending on medical need.
Even when coverage is straightforward, you still deserve a clear recovery roadmap, including what is normal, what is not, and how to reach the team if something feels off.

Five subtle signals - right-side ache, lingering nausea, post-meal bloating, rib-cage tenderness, and fever or jaundice - often mean gallstones are brewing. Spot them early and avoid an emergency gallbladder attack.
